Duct Leak Test
Duct Leak Test
A duct leak test is a diagnostic procedure used to measure the air tightness of a building’s ductwork. It helps identify and quantify air loss that can reduce system efficiency and affect indoor air quality. During the test, all supply and return registers are temporarily sealed, and a calibrated fan is connected to pressurize or depressurize the duct system. A pressure-measuring device then records the airflow needed to maintain the set pressure, allowing technicians to calculate the leakage rate. The results are compared against standard limits to pinpoint areas requiring repair, such as leaks at joints, seams, or connections.
Why It's Performed
- Improve Energy Efficiency: Minimizes the loss of heated or cooled air, helping reduce energy consumption and utility costs.
- Ensure Proper Indoor Air Quality: Prevents unconditioned or contaminated air from infiltrating the duct system and being distributed to occupied spaces.
- Check System Performance: Confirms that air is delivered to the intended spaces without significant losses due to leakage, ensuring the HVAC system operates as designed.
